Orv Johnson Kathy and Orv Johnson Johnson Family Orv Johnson Plastic Parts Manufacturing Rotary Member 52 years BIRTHPLACE: Born in home built in 1890’s by my great-grandfather on 25 acres of land North of Center City, Minnesota. My father and his six siblings were also born in that home. During my years at home, my family consisted of my grandfather, an uncle, my parents, a sister and brother. Another sister died at the age of 6 from a brain tumor when I was 10. EDUCATION: Elementary and high school at Lindstrom-Center City (Chi-Hi) and graduated in 1955, Pre-Engineering at Gustavus Adolphus College 1955-1957, Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at University of Minnesota 1960 EMPLOYMENT: I enjoyed farm work at home and for neighbors plus a summer at a relative’s service station to earn money for college. While at the U of M I participated in the Work-Study program for Mechanical Engineering Students with Minneapolis-Moline 2 quarters and Honeywell for 4 quarters and was paid well enough to pay my expenses. After graduation in 1960 I was hired fulltime as a Production Engineer at the Honeywell Golden Valley Plant in their Plastic Molding and Die Casting Department. In 1964 I was recruited by United Fabricators and Electronics (UFE) for an Executive Engineering Position in their Stillwater offices. The company was well known by many Fortune 500 companies such as Ford, IBM, 3M, Maytag, Eastman Kodak, etc. for its ability to design and build molds for precision plastic components and to produce zero-defect parts. Soon after I joined the Company, several proprietary products were developed and marketed under the name Kroy with Ufe as a division. I became the General Manager of the UFE division and a member of the board of directors of Kroy. In 1979 I was promoted to President of UFE with the assignment to sell the Division. With the help of 2 other Ufe Managers we managed to buy the Ufe division with a loan from Prudential Insurance and formed a new company, UFE Incorporated in 1980 and I was named CEO and President of the new company. As our customers grew and many moved to Mexico and the Far East, we followed and opened plants in Mexico and Singapore in addition to maintaining production in our Minnesota and Wisconsin plants. In the 1990’s Martin Kellogg became President and then CEO. I remained Board Chair until we sold the company in 2008. ROTARY: One of our friends and neighbors, Maury Jensen, invited me to a Rotary Meeting in early 1973. I was impressed by the motto “Service Above Self” which supported my personal beliefs of tithing both money and time. I found the international conventions very inspirational, and I enjoyed working on projects that were selected that made an impact because of a major commitment by all club members—the Tanzania projects for example. FAMILY TODAY: Kathy and I have been blessed with our 67 years of marriage, with 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. When including all the spouses, we now are a family of 32 and anticipating more. We thank God for His words of advice and the teachings of Jesus found in the bible that have guided us through our lives and provide wonderful plans for our future with Him. |
