Last Meeting
LAST MEETING: Heather Logelin, President of the St. Croix Valley Foundation. Our club has a long history with the foundation as many of our members were instrumental in its founding and leadership over the years. Thanks for the good work you do, SCVF!

Social November 30th
Thank you to all who gathered for the club social at The Dock on November 30th. We collected gift cards and cash for Community Thread's Holiday Hope program and raised over $400! Thanks to Amanda and Molly for planning the event and for Sally’s leadership with the Holiday Hope initiative.

Ukraine Family Update
Oksana and her daughters have moved into their new apartment and have their own car! They are on their way to independence! Special thanks to Jack and Jeanne Matlock of the Stillwater Sunrise Rotary for donating their car to the family. Oksana is looking for work and we are asking you to see if your network has any available opportunities in restaurants, cafeterias, cleaning or industry (i.e. Anderson Windows). She’d like to work part-time as she continues to take English classes.  If you have an opportunity, please see Schuyler.

Four-Way Test Signup
We are looking for members to share a brief story of the 4 way test in action (or what it means to you as a Rotarian). Please review the sign-up and contact Amanda or Tom if you have any questions. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E49A5AA2CA1FCCF8-rotary1. If you would like to read more on the history and what it meant to the creator, you can read the full article here: https://rotary5630.org/history-of-the-four-way-test/.

Senitizo's December Newsletter

December 2023 Newsletter

Celebrating 76 babies born at the clinic and 10,500 patients treated so far in 2023!

From Ted Hooley, CEO:

"I love this photo. The two mothers on the left were two of the first women to deliver their babies at our clinic earlier in the year. Now, because of the trust we've built with our patients and the quality of services we provide, they came back when their babies came down with an illness. Instead of waiting until their babies' health deteriorated, they came right away when the illnesses just began. That's how we stop 13% of children dying before the age of five from easily treatable diseases."

In our last newsletter we were very excited to announce the successful opening of our full maternal health services. Today, we're happy to report that we've welcomed 76 babies into the world since March! More importantly, we've successfully ensured the safe delivery of ten women suffering from obstetric emergencies. These emergencies experienced by women during pregnancy and delivery are extremely dangerous and without advanced care very often end in the death of the mother and baby. It's these emergencies that have led to the catastrophic rate of maternal mortality in the Central African Republic where one out of every 100 women die during child birth.

Patient Highlight

Prisca previously had a C-section, and during her recent pregnancy knew she would have to deliver again via C-section. The problem? She lives 30 miles from the closest hospital and couldn't afford the surgical materials, medications, and hospital fees (~$100).

During her prenatal consultations at the clinic, our midwife team developed a birth plan with her. When the time came, Senitizo would transport her to the hospital in our ambulance with our premade C-Section and Post-Op kits that contain all of the necessary drugs and supplies so she could have a safe and healthy procedure. It was a success, and Prisca and Merveille (pictured) are happy and healthy!

Over 10,500 patients treated in 2023

Every day over 50 patients line up at our clinic starting at 6am. Our medical staff triage these patients to make sure we're treating children, pregnant women, and emergency cases as a priority. Since all of the patients arrive at the same time, one of our medical staff educates patients on basic health concepts (Valerie, our midwife, is leading the session pictured below). These include good hygiene practices, information on how diseases are transmitted, the importance of bringing a sick child to the clinic in a timely manner, etc.).

About two-thirds of the patients we treat are children under the age of five and in most cases they are suffering from easily treatable diseases, but they often become deadly if not treated properly. The most common conditions we see are malaria, diarrheal diseases caused by different bacteria, pneumonia, and intestinal parasites (worms, giardia, etc.).

Thankfully with timely diagnosis by our medical staff and the medication we provide free of charge at the clinic these children recover quickly!

Considering making an end of the year donation?

We can't do the work we do without the generous support of all of you! We have an exciting year of health care delivery planned for 2024 and your tax-deductible donation today will make those plans a reality and provide health care (and save the lives of many) to the people we serve.

A note from Ted Hooley, CEO of Senitizo:

"Every time I'm down at the clinic, people come up to me to express their gratitude for the health services we provide - health services that they've never had access to before. Now it's my turn to express our gratitude to you, our supporters, that make all of this possible. Thank you - with your support we are accomplishing great things, and it's just the beginning!"
