There is so much we can do -- both locally and internationally. We talk a lot about doing things for our youth.
STRIVE is a great opportunity to get involved locally with helping youth, have fun, connect, and get a make up.
Want to help youth, but don't want too much of a commitment time-wise? Consider a 2 or 4 hour opportunity with Youth Service Bureau to help youth develop employment skills.
Don't sit on the sidelines -- Sign up!
On another note, I wanted to be sure you knew, that besides myself, there are some really awesome people celebrating their birthdays this week.
STRIVE is a program where Rotary Clubs work with a high school for the purpose of motivating students to improve their school performance during their senior year. The major aspect of the program is that it is Student Driven and only facilitated by Rotarians. This FUN and INTERACTIVE program and involve every Rotarian.
Did you know there are an estimated 24-42 million people enslaved worldwide? Closer to home, there are 8,000-14,000 victims trafficked for sex each year in Minnesota. While it is awful, we are so thankful for those who are fighting tirelessly to end human trafficking. A huge thank you to Rotarian Clare Lillis for joining our club today to share how Rotary has joined the fight against human trafficking.
Youth Service Bureau is accepting volunteers to conduct Mock Interviews for youth. This is a new program to help at-risk youth develop employment skills, including completing job applications, resumes, and interviews.
The first day of the workshop is on October 6th from 9 am – 11am. On this day we will be teaching the students about how to fill out job applications. We will be focusing on using certain vocabulary and how to translate personal strengths into related job tasks. This day we will also be preparing them on how to have a successful interview.
The second day is October 20th from 9am – 11 am. This day we will be holding mock interviews.
Please contact Bob (bob.sherman@ysb.net or 612-386-3354) or Rebekah Windschitl (651-439-8800 ext104) if you have question or are interested.
Stillwater Noontime Rotary seeking Spotlight Organizations to Benefit from Upcoming Taste of the Valley Event!
Each January, the Stillwater Noontime Rotary presents Taste of the Valley. This year the event will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at the Heights Hall & Club. This community event is designed to celebrate our wonderful area restaurants. Nearly a dozen local restaurants provide small plate items to over 200 participants in a cocktail party atmosphere. Participants vote on the best food items in several categories. It also includes a silent and live auction and a higher end wall of wine. It is not only great fun, but the event raises money for important local non-profit organizations. We call these our “Spotlight” organizations. Past events have been able to raise as much as $25,000. This results in grants from $5000 up to $25,000 depending on the number of Spotlight organizations selected. The beneficiaries from the event are selected each year based on criteria that include:
The organization cannot have received funds from this event in the past 3 years.
The organization must be a stable, well-established entity.
The organization must have a specific project or service need for these funds and can demonstrate how these funds can make a significant impact to advance this project or service.
The organization’s mission, project and/or service must be consistent with our Rotary values.
The organization must be willing to engage with the Rotary in the fund-raising/ticket selling associated with the event.
The project must support children, youth and families, community health, the arts, the environment, special needs individuals, or people without basic needs for food, housing, or healthcare
We invite you to submit a short, one-page application form located on the Stillwater Rotary website at https://www.stillwaterrotary.org/ . If you have any questions, you can email either of the above individuals.
I have seen things that have truly changed my outlook on life. These kids go to this school everyday and yet they always have a smile on there face. Don't focus on what you don't have, and focus on what you can do with what you do have. I know living in this type of environment would break many Americans, but all this environment has ever done for me is made me Stronger. I will always remember how kind everyone is here. I have learned things and will continue to learn things that could never ever be learned in a classroom, or a book.
