World Water Day
World Water Day is on March 22nd.   Rotary has demonstrated a commitment to provide clean water and sanitation.

The Rotary International-USAID International H2O Collaboration is a partnership between Rotary and the U.S. Agency for International Development that supports lasting, positive change to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives.

Our partnership combines the vast network of Rotary volunteers with the expertise of USAID to influence communities and policymakers to solve seemingly unsolvable problems and bring about lasting change through education and advocacy.

Cogwheel Connections - Rotary Convention
Are you still on the fence as whether to attend this year’s Rotary International Convention in Atlanta?  What are you waiting for?!
  • It’s the 100th Anniversary of The Rotary Foundation so it’s going to be a great party!
  • It’s a great opportunity to interact with Rotarians from all over the world!
  • Atlanta is the closest and least expensive the Convention will be for several years!
  • BILL GATES HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED AS ONE OF THE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS!  He’ll make comments on how close we are to finishing the job of eradicating polio.  Bill Gates doesn’t speak to groups like this often, and it’s a great opportunity to see him speak about Rotary and the good we do!  He’ll join many other great speakers, such as Jack Nicklaus and many more.
  • WE’RE HAVING A DISTRICT PARTY! We’ve alluded to it before, but now it’s official!  District Governor Jim Hunt and myself will be hosting a District Social Event on Saturday late-afternoon from 4:30-6:30 at the Marriott Marquis.  This will be a great way for you to get your feet under you and interact with other Rotarians from our District on the Convention’s opening eve.
  • The Convention’s preregistration discount ends on March 15th.  If you register after that, you’ll pay the $490 that is the same you’ll pay if you register when you get to Atlanta.    For more details and registration visit:

Attendance and Make-Ups
About a third of our members have 100% attendance.   We know it can be difficult to make it to our meeting every week; you can receive make-ups for meetings in two ways:

1. Attend another Rotary meeting. Whether you are on vacation or in a different part of the Cities, you can attend any club. You will pay for your meal there and receive a make-up slip. Bring that to club, and you will receive a credit on your next bill as well as an attendance make-up.

2. Participate in a Rotary service event such as bell ringing, Hockey Day Rotary tent volunteer, Lake Elmo tutoring, STRIVE program, etc. Come to club and make a note that you volunteered, and you will receive an attendance credit.

This is a great way to showcase what our members are doing and allow you to work toward a 100% attendance pin at the annual picnic in June.

Cogwheel Connections - John Rheinberger
Info from the Stillwater Gazette,  published 1/29/17.

John Rheinberger, with his siblings Joe and Marguerite, attended the presidential inauguration Jan. 20 in Washington D.C.   In addition to the inauguration, the Rheinbergers attended the Kentucky Bluegrass Ball and spent hours with marchers in the Women’s March on Washington Jan. 21.

Following are John's replies to the Gazette about their experience.

What was most memorable to you about the inauguration?

The most memorable event was the president’s 1,435 word speech. I originally thought Senator Chuck Schumer of New York had made a semi-successful attempt to hijack the event by giving a left-leaning address through his position as a co-chair of the 58th inaugural event. He was later booed off the podium. As it surprisingly turned out the senator had only primed the president’s forthcoming speech thus making it only better. I had never been in a live audience before but I thought that he had truly engaged them as well as me. And, a great ending with all participating by saying “America First!”

How would you describe the mood in Washington D.C. during the week of the inauguration?

I expected the city to be really energized. Except for pockets it was not. With the President getting only 4 percent of the vote in D.C. (11,500 votes out of 280,000) I should not have been surprised. On the morning of the inaugural you could get a seat on the Metro line except at the stations very close to the event. I had expected it to be totally jammed. Many Capital Hill offices were open for receptions at least by the Republican majority. I sensed that the political divisions were still there and the Women’s March on the next day confirmed it.

What other thoughts would you like to share about the experience?

I encourage others to attempt to get involved in historic events. inaugurals are such occasions. Looking forward you do not really know if you are currently witnessing an unbelievable event. The 58th inaugural maybe just another garden variety inaugural or it could be something clearly a historic turning point. Further, as you plan to somehow be involved in such events you do not know how your personal life may change, if any, because of your participation. It is these unknown surprises that make a lifetime fun!

Hockey Day was a Success!
Working together with the Stillwater Sunrise and Lake Elmo Rotary Clubs, we had 37 Rotarians plus 12 family members work in the booth and/or at Trinity during the day.   Great joint effort!  We sold more than 800 cups of coffee and hot chocolate.   Some shifts were crazy busy and others were a bit slow, but everyone seemed to enjoy it and had great fellowship, we shared information about Rotary, and raised funds for Polio Plus.   Kudos to Katie Rolf and Bob Eiselt for coordinating!

One Rotary Summitt & Hockey Day
Last weekend, was the Rotary District 5960 Midterm Rally & One Summitt.  This weekend is Hockey Day.   What do they have in common?
The One Rotary Summit is a three-hour synergistic learning experience asking all participants to work together to develop creative solutions. The One Rotary Summit participants worked in teams to leverage tools and information in relation to Membership, Public Image and The Rotary Foundation. It was encouraged to think outside the box! We all know that when it comes to our Clubs there is not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Our opportunity to participate in Hockey Day by hosting a Booth is a great way to create fellowship, meet potential members, and raise funds and awareness of Rotary
A BIG THANK YOU to our Membership Committee (especially Katie Rolf and Bob Eiselt) for coordinating this, and making our participation in Hockey Day happen!

Who Do You Know?

The top two reasons people join Rotary are to meet new people and to get involved in their communities. Many of the non-Rotarians you know are looking for the same things. Invite them to help with a service project, attend a networking night, or participate in a club gathering so they can see for themselves how Rotary connects leaders to make positive change.

Consider these potential candidates for membership:

  • Friends and family members
  • Business and professional acquaintances
  • Younger community leaders who are already connected to Rotary through Rotaract, RYLA, peace fellowships, Youth Exchange, and other programs

Top 5 Reasons

Following are the "Top 5 Reasons" to go to the Rotary International Convention, June 10-14, 2017 in Atlanta Georgia:

1. Meet the most inspiring people in the world

Rotary members from more than 130 countries meet at the convention every year. This is your unique opportunity to connect with old friends, make new ones, and share stories about your club’s current and future projects.

2. Strengthen your club and your passion for Rotary

The general sessions and breakout sessions offer countless ways to help you get the most from your Rotary membership and make your club stronger. In the House of Friendship, you’ll find new ideas, learn best practices, and share project successes — it’s where the Rotary world comes together!

3. Join The Rotary Foundation celebration

The culmination of a yearlong celebration of the Foundation’s centennial takes place in the city where it all began. Join the festivities at The Rotary Foundation’s 100th Birthday Party. Attend a book signing and meet the author of “Doing Good in the World: The Inspiring Story of The Rotary Foundation’s First 100 Years.” See all the activities we have planned.

4. Explore the American South

Bask in the sun on the Atlantic and Gulf shores. Test your game at some of the world’s most celebrated golf courses. Experience the magic of Florida’s Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World.

Explore the natural wonders of the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Step back in time at Colonial Williamsburg. Sample the sophisticated charms of New Orleans, Savannah, and Charleston. Learn more

5. Enjoy special tours and events offered by the Host Organization Committee

Watch for more information about special activities like Restaurant Night, Host Hospitality Night, and a screening of "Gone With the Wind" at the historic Fox Theatre. Visit the Host Organization Committee site to find more activities.
